The power of cellphones at events- Santosh Desai, MD, Futurebrands

?

Almost every person from a rickshaw driver to a businessman today owns a mobile phone. It has become a necessity more than a luxury. Gone are the days when there was a telephone in one household in a colony, these days there is a mobile phone in ever pocket. But like everything else, it has its pros and cons too. EE, in conversation with Mr. Santosh Desai, MD and CEO, Futurebrands, finds out affect of the usage of mobile phones in the events space – the pros and the cons.

“The mobile phone is a very powerful device. It gives an average person the pleasure of art and the ability to see himself in an elevated form of an artist in his own eyes, which is an incredible thing. But of course, like not every person armed with a pen becomes a writer, likewise, not every person with a camera phone becomes a photographer,” begins Mr. Santosh Desai, as EE caught up with him after a debate on how the mobile phone may be killing photography.

Coming back to the topic of the power of mobile phones in the events space, Mr. Desai continues, “Mobile phones have helped the event makers break boundaries. We are now able to connect with millions and millions at the same time without the limitation of space. We are not only reaching out to the number of people present at the event but also millions of others at other cities, and even countries. The event becomes a national or an international event just like that. That’s the beauty of it.” What about the number of people present at the event with mobile phones? How does that add to the magic or deter an event in any way?

“Nowadays everyone has a mobile phone. The biggest benefit that an event organizer gets from the people armed with mobile phones is the live tweeting and status updating. People are excited and they are talking about the event. They want to tell their friends about it, that’s the reaction in its pure, raw form and it builds to the event. People get to know about the event not through media and newspapers but through actual people present at the event – and that’s what is appreciated more. On the contrary the two biggest disadvantages that this technology brings with it is that it distances you from the reality as much as it brings you closer – that is when people get lost in their mobile phones and are only using their mobile phones during the event for maybe clicking pictures or updating, they don’t get to experience the event in its totality. That effect is lost. Secondly, when people go off at events with their mobile phones clicking pictures. There are so many mobile phone cameras going off at the same time and their flash lights can be a big deterrent to an event. There are many more but these are the biggest advantages and disadvantages of mobile phones at events,” finishes Mr. Desai.
