Some Endless Possibilities of Virtual Reality Events: Bhavnesh Sawhney, Co-founder, FB Celebrations

With room for innovation and no cap on your creativity, the possibilities of what you can do and create with VR and Augmented Reality in the events space is endless writes Bhavnesh Sawhney.

The Covid outbreak has presented marketeers and event agencies with an opportunity and task to take their experiences online and everyone at this moment is exploring and curating what best can come out of online virtual events.

To meet with what is the need of the hour, Virtual reality technology has been gaining more popularity than before. VR is highly used in the gaming industry, however, with the current times, it is making its way through multiple other industries. In the events industry specifically, VR can be used to a great advantage.

A lot of research has been conducted on the benefits of VR for businesses working in organizing events and various shows and the benefits we as event planners and organisers can gain from this is multi fold. The VR technology can be used in a variety of event spaces, whether a conference, meetings or trade shows.

The idea of events in outdoor or indoor spaces is about exploration, moving around, meeting people and experiencing the ambience. With VR, building an experiential platform to recreate how experiences happen in the real world without people leaving the comfort of their homes is relatively easier. This also allows flexibility to build virtual spaces that go beyond any physical constraints.

Scaling a virtual platform to reach hundreds of thousands of people is made easier than ever before because of the quick and robust scalable infrastructure that is now readily available. With room for innovation and no cap on your creativity, the possibilities of what you can do and create with VR and Augmented Reality (AR) in the events space is endless. Since it allows a wide range of possibilities that one can explore, it also keeps guests and participants more engaged.

In the last few years, India had very few companies that had their toes in the VR space. Now, it has become one of the most prominent markets for AR/VR technologies in the entertainment and events industries. AR/VR is not just a business vertical anymore, but also used in other businesses. It seemed like just yesterday when newspapers asked you to download an app that could turn its photos into short video clips. Since then, the industry has seen tremendous growth and stands out to be one of the fastest growing as well.

Now we can create content on a new kind of canvas - reality. Adding a whole new dimension to reality itself can solve all sorts of challenges for every process in the industry. With the current situation in hand, the VR space has picked up, event experts in India have used their time and investment in these testing times to add a whole new dimension to events using the VR/AR technology to re-create in person events.

Also, the restrictions on number of people permitted for a large gathering, space of events, and free movement are being heavily controlled by the government, however, peoples frustration is growing and the need to get back to reality is stronger, therefore virtual reality in the events sector is booming and will continue to climb the upward slope in the coming months as well. The endless possibilities and flexibility keeps virtual reality events more interesting.

The main reason that is keeping virtual reality events on a high rise for event planners in India is the endless possibilities and unlimited creativity resources it comes with.

Creating an event with a combination of virtual reality and augmented reality can fulfil almost any purpose and can be used to the event planners and their client’s full potential. However, saying this, it is inevitable to look at the other side where, in spite of having all resources to create this new dimension of events space, in India - for some it is still unknown.

The important thing is to really focus on the selection of features you would like to offer keeping in mind the kind of event you plan to host. Using your resources to make it user friendly is a key factor as the event is often virtually viewed and enjoyed by guests of all age groups.

To put it simply, virtual reality transports you into a completely different world using technology to recreate a real-life setting and Augmented reality gives a digital overlay to the real world.

The possibilities are endless and how you use your imagination to create experiences that are flexible and all about what you would like to offer your guests and attendees.

No matter how well a wedding is planned, certain guests just can’t attend. However, with VR they can now be present as you create a way that puts the guests in the middle of the event and have all the experiences. They can look around, listen to the chants, be a part of the ceremony and get the next best thing to actually being there.

Virtual guests can also interact with the bride and groom, giving them a way to say “congrats!” from afar. The host can also have a virtual tour that shows them the venue. In case guests are not sure that they want to attend, a virtual tour can be just the ticket to get them excited about event. It’ll give them a taste of the experience and enough information to make an informed choice.

Many events are well on their way to taking advantage of virtual attendance. And while you may not be using it yet, this tech trend is going to sweep the industry much sooner than we know it. But hey, at least we know venue capacity won’t be much of an issue.
