?

On the occasion of World Sight Day which falls on every second Thursday each year in the month of October, Sightsavers had organised a free eye health check-up camp at the Okhla Industrial Estate Association premises in Okhla Phase III from 10 AM to 6 PM. Okhla Industrial Area is well known for the number of cottage industries and labourers who work here and Sightsavers in association with Okhla Industrial Area Association thought that there could be nothing better than arranging for such an eye health camp. The screening was conducted by doctors from the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and had provided the following services free-of-charge to all participants:

Comprehensive eye screening exam, which will check the visual status of the eye and also screen for diseases such as cataract, glaucoma, etc.

Instant blood sugar test to check for diabetes and possibility of diabetic retinopathy

Prescription of lens power and medication if required

Medical consultation on any other eye-related problems

Eye care tips to deal with computer-stress and other common visual problems

Sightsavers had also arranged for screening camps in other states as well. In Odisha, a unique and innovative eye screening programme for People with Disabilities (PWDs) had been organised. This unique camp had screened more than 200 PWDs who are supported by the Odisha Social Inclusion Project. In Bhubaneswar, Sightsavers had organised a camp for 300 patients. JPM Rotary Eye Hospital had agreed to be the lead partner for this camp. While in Bhopal, Sightsavers took the opportunity to partner with Radio Mirchi and together talk about the theme of the day and help create awareness for eye health and avoidable blindness.

In Kolkata, a mega screening camp had been arranged targeting over 700 OPD in a single day. A unique eye health (4 digit) no. helpline was launched by the Minister of Health (in presence of many senior Govt officials). This helpline will be manned continuously six days a week and would provide all types of eye health service information. 26 ophthalmologists around the state have been roped in this helpline for information and services.
