As a part of its invigorating digital series - ‘NCPA@home’, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai presents an electrifying performance, Ember: Dance with LIVE Fire by Ziya Azazi on Friday, 1st May 2020 - 6 pm on the NCPA YouTube channel. This spinning dance form involves whirling surrounded by live fire!

Ember: Dance with live fire was a part of NCPA’s Sufi the music festival, Sama’a: the mystic ecstasy held on November 21, 2015, at the NCPA.

Ziya Azazi is a Turkish born Austrian dancer and choreographer whose solo-dance productions are primarily based on experiential whirling and repetition. This solo performance deals with the desperation of man within the ongoing life cycle. It is particularly concerned with self-destruction, the pain of mortality, and the inevitable ending within the continuous cycle of existence. The piece represents lifelong battle with individual boundaries depicting life as an irreversible circle, an unavoidable trap. The fire which has once been lit to illuminate the path now becomes an encircling trap in time. The fire intensifies the complexities of witnessing the dualities of living: joy and pain, beginning and end, presence and absence, life and death.

NCPA@home series includes exclusive videos and content across genres from NCPA's extensive archival library.
