Maruti Swift Dzire sponsors Outlook Traveller Awards 2014; organized by Showhouse Events
Amidst rain, chaos and last minute arrangements, the fourth edition of the Outlook Traveller Awards concluded on 28 March at Hotel Dusit Devarana, New Delhi. The awards were aimed at the best and most deserving across 40 categories from the world of the travel and hospitality experiences in India.
The event was sponsored by Swift Dzire and Yatra and was organized by Showhouse Events. Mr.Parvez Dewan, Secretary, Government of India, Ministry of Tourism presided over the award ceremony as the Chief Guest.
Every year, for seven years now, Outlook Traveller has been conducting a survey of its readers to assess the very best of travel and hospitality experiences in India. The members of the jury panel selected the nominees from a comprehensive list of options and also made additional insightful suggestions. As with previous surveys, the survey questionnaire was published in the November and December 2013 issues of Outlook Traveller, besides being offered online at outlooktraveller.com, with a deadline of December 31, 2013. The survey responses were collected, collated and analysed by market research company, Ipsos.
Editor-in-Chief, Outlook Traveller, Vinod Mehta, kickstarted the award ceremony with an address that revealed some interesting facts and figures. He stated that in the year 2013 India lost close to 10,000 crores due to negative publicity from globally advertised incidents. The tourism industry grew by 5.4% but he referred to it as an underachievement. He also commented that India does not rank in the list of the first 50 unsafe countries for women. He said “India is ranked 90 out of 216 unsafe countries for women, but our attempt should be to not be seen on such a list”. He announced that February is the most profitable year when it comes to tourism and February this year reported a growth of 7.2%. Speaking on the subject of Visa on arrival he said that except 8 (including Pakistan) all other countries of the world will very soon have the provision of granting Visa on arrival. Going by the scheme, the government of India has agreed to issue electronic Visas and the tourism industry is very excited.
This year, two Special Jury awards were instituted: one for Outstanding Contribution for Travel, and the other for the Indian Hotel Debut of the Year.
