In an industry that is experiential, leadership needs to be creative, immersive and applicable to a younger generation writes Mohan,

Leaders are seen as beacons of change. They question ideas and give answers to questions when nobody wants to. It goes without saying that good leadership is crucial to any successful business. One of the greatest things about leadership is that everyone from the team can bring something different to the table.Leaders also have a more fluid relationship with the decision makersin the organisation. Owners and chief executives need to hire people who are more relevant or even better than them. As a leader, you need to understand the specific traits that will help you achieve a high level of leadership success.

  • Communication is one of the most key elements of leadership. Good communication skills need to be imbibed in order to effectively become a good leader or manager. As a leader, you will be need to accurately convey your ideas and thoughts to those that work for you
  • Motivation is a very importantpart that plays into good leadership. Employees tend to stagnate when motivation decreases and it will decrease, without proper motivation. Instead of using fear, a leader must challenge their employees so they can work better
  • Teamwork is always something to consider when striving to become a good leader. This means not only teaching your employees to work together but to become part of the team yourself
  • Increasing your education and knowledge is definitely a good thing when trying to improve your leadership skills so as to not only stay relevant in the current times but also to teach / mentor your team to get effective results

In an industry that is experiential, leadership needs to be creative, immersive and applicable to a younger generation. The application of business management and organisational skills to create and develop large scale events ranging from festivals, conferences, ceremonies, weddings, formal parties, concerts, or conventions comes under the umbrella term of “event management”.It involves studying the brand, identifying its target audience, designing the event concept, and coordinating the technical aspects before actually launching the event. Every event is different and comes with a myriad of challenges.

People in events become leaders sooner than in conventional industries because of varying challenges and thus leadership strategies also need to be different. Even though the work is thrilling, this industry does not have specific working hours and that can cause a lot of stress to the team as they would not have a healthy work-life balance. As a leader, you must know how to manage your teams stress as it can negatively affect work and overall productivity.Fairness, transparency and reliable metrics are hallmarks of highly energetic teams. These help the teams focus on the job and keep the team members constantly motivated to work in a collaborative environment. In a demanding sector like this, a leader must learn how to manage expectations and make room for growth for everyone. The team should feel that there is opportunity for everyone and all in the team know what exactly they have contributed to the combined effort.

All in all, leadership as a term and meaning has been evolving over time due to changes in work culture and employee engagement taking centre stage. As developing the leadership abilities, you must always put yourself in the shoes of your team members and make a positive and whole hearted effort to understand that the team comprises of people like you and believe that they can do great things with the right guidance. By keeping yourself grounded and approaching problems with more composed emotions and logical understanding, you can lead your team to perfection you want to achieve.
