3rd edition of Lusofonia Games 2014; Percept executes Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The Lusofonia Games 2014 commenced on January 18, 2014 and ended on January 29, 2014 at PNJ Stadium, Fatorda, Goa. The 3rd edition of the Games witnessed the participation of many nations including Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Macau (Chinese SAR), Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe, and associate members Equatorial Guinea, Sri Lanka and host country India.



Percept Sports & Entertainment executed the opening and closing ceremonies for the games.







As part of the pre-event activity Percept Sports and Entertainment (PS&E) took prior approvals from all government officials and parents of the children participating at the event. PS&E also handled the content development, artist management, choreography, prop and costume management, logistics for the team and rehearsing school students, Travel & F&B, and the entire technical management ops.



Dance auditions were conducted for 1500 school students across 13 schools in Madgaon, Goa. Rehearsals were held for 900 students at the Chikalim Ground rehearsal venue and the Velsao Ground for the opening ceremony. 800 school students, 250 college students, 450 folk dancers, and 1000 crew members came together along with more than 1000 props to create a colourful and energetic opening and closing ceremony for the Lusofonia Games. 900 costumes were used for the vibrant performances.



The event was attended by many VIPs and celebrities, and entry was granted free to the general populace to drive enthusiasm, attendance and viewership.



The opening ceremony on January 18, 2014 started with the Navy Band playing the national anthem after which the countdown to the games began which was accompanied with a spectacular sound and light SFX followed by stunning pyros. The cultural segment started with ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ with four ladies dressed in flowing Indian attire drawing a rangoli spread across the entire ground ending with the words Atithi Devo Bhava being projected on the ground. The cultural influences section included over 450 dancers who had come from across Goa and pan India, and the act was supported with brilliant customized animation. The ‘Goa through Mario’s eyes’ act featured 10 entertaining muppets. The architectural marvels section showcased 3 monuments viz. Panjim Church, Fort Aguada and Mangeshi Temple. The flora and fauna section displayed the landscape and prime occupations of Goa including turtle harvesting and marine life. The final segment saw lead performers Lorna Codeiro, famed Konkani language singer and tiatrist, and Sonia Shirsat, renowned Fado music genre singer with many popular albums to her credit enter the grounds on a boat to render their melodious songs. The Opening Ceremony wrapped up with all dancers, artists and mass cast re enter the grounds and perform to the Lusofonia theme song.







The gala closing ceremony took place on January 29, 2014 and saw a multi level stage set up with multiple ramps and a large central LED. The live performance segment included live band performances by Merline D Souza and Hema Sardesai, and a traditional fusion of drummers which included about 72 drummers from pan India jamming with each other. The lively Jason & Sylvia Dance Performance with 100 dancers on stage got the crowd on its feet. The cultural Goan performance was a melting pot of different performances depicting the festivals of Goa, a sports act whereby various sports institutions and academies came together to showcase their talent featuring yoga, malkham, skipping, body building and more. The laser beam show was extravagant. The show ended with a carnival procession which showcased a float designed by the famous Goan float designer Mr. Francisco Martin, accompanied with 300 dancers.



Percept Sports & Entertainment pulled off the complete stage and technical set up for the Closing Ceremony including artist rehearsals in less than 24 hours.
